Social media itself featured prominently in the most shared tweets of 2014: from China blocking Instagram during theHong Kong protests, to a death penalty sentence for Facebook posts in Iran, to the gristly murder of a woman whose Twitter account named and shamed drug cartels in Mexico. The #BringBackOurGirls,#Ferguson,and #CARcrisis hashtags resonated globally while Human Rights Watch’s followers tweeted support for peaceful protesters in Venezuela, Turkey, and the United States to name a few.
